Thus, we are left with the question of what leads to the emergence of middle-class attitudes vis-Ă -vis ideas, aspirations and sensibilities. Is it the support of dominant capitalist forces? Or is it the opportunity created to render an accessible working situation that defines the middle class of underclass?
Significant attempts have been made by Dalit intellectuals and activists to demand a fair share in the government’s coffers. A cursory glance at the statistics of Dalits in the employment sector presents to us the huge backlog in this regard. Even after Dalits occupy all the resources available to them in the public and private sectors, there will still be a sizeable portion that will remain unemployed. Therefore, apart from drawing benefits from the state and the private sector, what are the other avenues Dalits should look for? We do not know yet.
